Sunlake Road at Babcock Street is still closed by floodwater. I-95 south of Babcock loses inside lanes at night through Saturday, Nov. 7.
Last checked Nov. 6, 2026. Updated weekly. Sources: the Florida Department of Transportation District 5 project site CFLRoads.com, its Brevard County lane closures, the City of Melbourne Traffic Advisories and Brevard County Public Works.
Most of the big road work around Melbourne is on state roads run by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District 5: I-95, U.S. 1, U.S. 192 (New Haven Avenue), Babcock Street (S.R. 507) and Eau Gallie Boulevard (S.R. 518). City streets are the City of Melbourne’s Public Works and Utilities Department; county roads are Brevard County’s.

This week
From the City of Melbourne’s Traffic Advisories, FL511 and FDOT’s Brevard lane closure list, all checked Nov. 5 and 6.
- Sunlake Road at Babcock Street (S.R. 507): closed by flooding. It was the one closure left on the city’s Nov. 4 road update, and FL511 still listed it closed in both directions Thursday evening. City crews are pumping floodwater out of Sun Lake Road and the South Lakes subdivision; the city asks drivers to avoid the area and not to drive around barricades. John Rodes Boulevard and the other roads closed by Monday’s flooding have reopened, according to the same update. More on the flood is in our boil water and flooding story.
- I-95, Babcock Street to the Indian River County line (south of Malabar and Palm Bay): intermittent double lane closures on the inside lanes and inside shoulder in both directions, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nightly through Saturday, Nov. 7, for milling and paving on project 450595-1, a $26.6 million resurfacing of about 12.5 miles that FDOT expects to finish in late 2027.
- NASA Boulevard (S.R. 508), Hickory Street to the railroad tracks: the westbound outside lane is closed 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Friday, Nov. 6, per the city’s advisory.
- Front Street, south of Melbourne Avenue: the southbound lane closure for drainage work was scheduled to end Friday, Nov. 6, per the city’s advisory. The city has not posted whether the flooding delayed it. Questions go to the Engineering Department at 321-608-7300.
- S.R. A1A, Oak Street to U.S. 192 (Melbourne Beach and Indialantic): intermittent flagging in both directions, 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., through Friday night, Nov. 6, for striping and curb ramp work on the A1A resurfacing project.
- N. Riverside Drive, Coral Way to 300 feet south of Sand Dollar Road (Indialantic): closed to through traffic through Friday, Nov. 20 for Brevard County Engineering drainage repairs, per the city’s advisory. A detour is posted and driveways in the work zone stay open. Call 321-637-5437, option 4.
- Ended: the nightly northbound I-95 paving closures from Palm Bay Road to north of Fiske Boulevard and the South Patrick Drive night paving were both listed through Thursday, Nov. 5. FDOT had not posted the week of Nov. 8 when we checked, so we could not confirm whether they resume.
- South Patrick Drive at Banana River Drive: the traffic shift FDOT announced for about three months from as early as Aug. 2 no longer appears on the project page or the Brevard lane closure list. FDOT has not posted that it ended.
FDOT’s U.S. 1 project page says “There are no lane closures at this time,” and the Brevard list shows nothing for Ellis Road.
Closures change daily. Check FL511 before you leave.
FDOT projects under construction
| Project | What’s happening | Cost | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| I-95, south of Malabar Road to north of Fiske Boulevard | Resurfacing 24 miles of I-95 and the ramps at Malabar Road, Palm Bay Road, U.S. 192, Eau Gallie Boulevard, Pineda Causeway, Wickham Road and Fiske Boulevard | $63.3 million | Early 2025 to spring 2027 |
| U.S. 1, Myers Drive to Crane Creek bridge | Resurfacing 2.1 miles in Melbourne and Palm Bay, drainage, sidewalks, buffered bike lanes, new signals and lighting | $10.1 million | Fall 2025 to fall 2026 |
| Ellis Road, west of John Rodes Boulevard to west of Wickham Road | Widening 1.83 miles from two lanes to four with a raised median, sidewalks, bike lanes and three new signals | $31 million | Fall 2026 to spring 2029 |
What changes on U.S. 1: the project includes the city’s streetscape plan, with raised medians from Avenida Del Rio to the Crane Creek bridge and directional medians at Roosevelt Avenue and Jernigan Avenue. FDOT says the medians “will restrict left turns from some side streets and driveways onto U.S. 1.”
On Ellis Road, the new traffic signals will be at East Drive, Distribution Drive/Technology Drive West and Technology Drive East.

City street work
The City of Melbourne posts lane closures for its own streets, utility work and downtown street events on its Traffic Advisories page. Recent notices in 2026 covered nighttime work on Post Road, Babcock Street and East Strawbridge Avenue, and downtown closures for street events. The city’s CodeRED alerts reach phones directly.
