The City of Melbourne contracts its curbside collection to Waste Management (WM). Garbage is picked up twice a week, recycling once a week on Wednesday and containerized yard waste once a week. Carts go out after 5 p.m. the day before and must be at the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day.

Your garbage days
Sarno Road is the dividing line:
| Garbage days | Where you live |
|---|---|
| Tuesday and Friday | From the north side of Sarno Road to the northern city limits |
| Monday and Thursday | From the south side of Sarno Road to the southern city limits |
| Monday and Thursday | Beachside Melbourne |
The fastest way to check an address is the city’s collection map: type the address or click the house and it shows every collection day.
Recycling: every Wednesday
All recycling in the city is collected on Wednesday. It is single-stream, so nothing needs to be sorted; it goes to a materials recovery facility for sorting. The city’s rules:
- The yellow-lid cart is for recycling only; the green-lid cart is for garbage only.
- Put clean, empty recyclables in loose. No bagged or boxed recyclables.
- Keep the lid closed. Rain makes paper and cardboard unrecyclable.
- WM’s Recycle Right guide lists what can and cannot go in the cart.
New residential customers can ask for a 96-gallon, 64-gallon or 35-gallon cart for garbage and for recycling if the house does not already have them. Extra carts and size swaps are handled by WM at 321-723-4455.
Yard waste
Containerized yard waste goes once a week, on a different split from garbage:
| Yard waste day | Where you live |
|---|---|
| Friday | North side of Lake Washington Road to the northern city limits |
| Tuesday | South side of Lake Washington Road to the north side of Sarno Road |
| Thursday | South side of Sarno Road to the north side of U.S. 192, plus beachside Melbourne |
| Monday | South side of U.S. 192 to the southern city limits |
The rules for prompt pickup:
- Use plastic or metal cans of 40 gallons or less, each 50 pounds or less.
- Cut branches to 4 feet or less.
- No plastic or paper bags, and no yard waste in the trash or recycling cart.
- Keep piles off storm drains, water meters and fire hydrants, and out from under power lines and trees.
- Large stacked piles should be picked up within five days of your regular yard waste day. Call WM or the ECO Division to request it.
- Tree crews and landscapers must haul away what they cut.
Bulk items and building debris
Furniture and household junk that will not fit in the cart is picked up by appointment: call WM at 321-723-4455 or the ECO Division at 321-608-5080. The same numbers schedule the clam truck for a special bulk yard waste pickup.
WM does not take wood fencing, lumber, docks, plywood, pallets or other construction and demolition material at the curb. The city lists the options:
- Take the wood to the Cocoa Landfill, 2520 Adamson Road, where residents can dispose of it themselves at no charge.
- Buy a WM Bagster bag at a home improvement store.
- Hire a roll-off container company, or ask WM for a paid special pickup.
Holidays
The city lists no trash, recycling or yard waste collection on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The dates still to come in 2026:
- Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11. Wednesday is recycling day citywide. The city confirmed on Nov. 5 that there is no WM collection that day and that City Hall is closed.
- Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26. City Hall also closed the Friday after Thanksgiving in 2025.
- Christmas Day, Friday, Dec. 25.
The city posts holiday notices on its news page. It does not publish a standing make-up schedule, so check the notice or call WM.
Paint, chemicals and electronics
Brevard County runs a household hazardous waste facility at the Sarno Landfill/Transfer Station, 3379 Sarno Road, open to county residents 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call 321-255-4452. It takes aerosol cans, cleaners, garden chemicals, car batteries, fluorescent bulbs, paint and thinners, pool chemicals and solvents, plus TVs, monitors, computers, printers and phones.
Hurricane season
The city asks residents to trim trees before hurricane season and to hold off on any trimming once a storm is approaching, so loose debris does not clog drains or become airborne. If a storm closes the Brevard County landfills, WM collection stops until they reopen.
